Take a seat and make yourself comfortable

RTL 5 is starting a new TV series in 2020, 'Douane in Actie' ('Customs in Action'), which will closely track a range of busy customs officers as they go about their daily work.

Starting on 7 January 2020, everyone in the Netherlands can watch the dynamic work of Dutch Customs in all its facets from the comfort of their own easy chair. That’s when the new RTL 5 series De Douane in Actie (Customs in Action) first airs, which will closely track a range of busy customs agents as they go about their daily work.

What are all the things you have to arrange for a 100% check of a high-risk flight at Schiphol airport? Why are inspection agents so busy looking for knock-off medicines in the parcel post? What other kinds of prohibited goods are found in courier consignments? What happens when bags full of drugs are found behind the doors of a sea container? How do you train a bouncy puppy into a tip-top sniffer dog? The eight part real-life series Customs in Action will answer these and numerous other questions.

For many months camera teams from the production company Simpel Media looked over the shoulders of dozens of Customs’ staff members. It was the first time that Dutch Customs gave an external party permission to film its operations so intensively. “We regularly get requests from TV makers to collaborate on programmes about our organisation”, general director Nanette van Schelven reveals. “Up until now we didn’t take them up on it because producers always wanted to zoom in on one specific aspect of our work, or film at one location – like the port of Rotterdam. The reason that we have gotten on-board this time is that Simpel Media has sketched out a broad panorama of what it is we do across the whole country. This gives a really nice picture of the sheer number and variety of our social duties.”

‘Douane in Actie’, starts on 7 January and runs for eight weeks every Tuesday evening at 8:30 pm on RTL 5. You can also view it after it airs by visiting www.uitzendinggemist.net.
